blogs in ether

I can't seem to maintain a personal blog for long... but I do like reading others blogs.

I spend most of my time working in the library, the rest playing guitar in one guise or another.

Follow buttonfly via Facebook (group: buttonfly!) or
http://www.myspace.com/buttonflys

to keep up to date on our shows and new tracks (we are working on a 3rd album for release mid-2011).

Also watch for Panic on Pluto, another project I'm involved in...we're at

allergies and music

Ah this month the seasons start to change whether we like it or not. Ragweed pollen floats unseen and my eyes become an itchy mess. Until I clue in and pop a few antihistimines and weave blurry-eyed to the pharmacy in search of antihistimine eye drops! ANd voila, a happier guitar player.

Had an awesome buttonfly trio gig on Thursday at the London Music Club in the cozy Front Room. Will put some pics and footage up on our myspace as soon as a certain teenage daughter returns our camera (and a missing bottle of rum?!).

Pat played some delectable solos, the sounds he gets out of that Telecaster still stop me short in my chords, sometimes it's hard to keep playing rhythm when all I want to do is sit back and listen to where he's going next.

We really, really hope to get recording soon. Autumn has a way of getting us up out of our lethargy, our dreamy states and get us thinking about recording those songs, squirreling away our songs for future use!

rainy day magic

It's SPRING and the BIRDS are happy and I am too!

OKAY, the gig's done (it was awesome to see so many people come out and even dance!) and the party's over (spring has sprung though the sunshine is welcome to come back, the plants are all glad of the rain) .....SO, WHAT'S UP NEXT?

BUTTONFLY UPDATE: we're working on new songs with buttonfly! -- Pat's got one called "Here" -- You're here, hand on heart! Which ends with some beautiful dissonance. I've been working on a new one called "Negotiating Gravity" about cycling downhill with my eyes closed on Palace Street, which is en route home and a not-very-well-travelled little street, very safe for eyes-closed night descent. Well, sorta. I do have a nice scar at the bridge of my nose from sailing down another hill once upon a time in Ottawa.

Working on booking gigs in accessible, all ages venues...hmmm. Soon to begin recording again, some slippery songs that didn't make it onto Hot Drambuie Nights like Wait for it!, Everyone's Gone Mad! and newer ones like When the Giants Awake, Junebug and Mainstreet.

LINDA HAS A JOB: just got a sweet part-time year-long contract at the downtown library in Children's/Teen Annex/Discover Place, so I'm looking forward to working with the stellar group of women (well, except for that boy page! they are all women)....

FAMILY & FOOD UPDATE: On the family front, we've been thinking of Brian all week, who's on an 8 day ambitious canoe trip with his friend Paul, through Algonquin Park, including Petawawa River, choppy lakes, wind and rain...Aieeee! and cold! It's been chilly too. Kids have been great in his absence, helping out lots and not arguing quite as frequently as usual.

Kids have been cooking too -- Bea made pasta with cream sauce, topped with spears of asparagus from our Box from On the Move Organics
http://onthemoveorganics.ca/

Zach and Brian both have been fascinated and impressed by Jeff and his bicycle and trailer made of recycling materials (a bed frame!) -- yes Jeff delivers the Local Boxes by bike and trailer right to our door. WOw! This week we got more asparagus, tiny leaves of spinach, lots of different kinds of sprouts, lettuce, potatoes, and a few pieces of fruit that get gobbled up soon after the lid is pried from the box...

WOOL & GLUE UPDATE: Just got a cool ball of black wool shot through with beautiful slips of color that I'm working on...The spider web in rainbow wool grafitti is still up downtown, though my felt bears with their tiny spiderwebs were all torn down. Souvenirs. Working on some collage cards on this rainy day.

So, hope you have some rainy day magic yourself this week! Or fireworks.

uppsala, sweden

okay so buttonfly is on haitus -- I'm living in Uppsala, Sweden for a year. I've put in two months so far and so ten to go...or so. I miss Pat, my fellow guitar player and songwriting buddy and also Dan, the drummer and drinking buddy and Dave, our steady bass player.

meanwhile, I spread the news here. I've got a few CDs out there and had a good response. No solos gigs cause I can barely find the time to play! I miss collaborating with pat, and singing! but it'll come, it'll come.

i'm going to hear Bob Wiseman...and Feist... on Tuesday, October 2nd in Stockholm at Cirkus. Whoo-hoo.

back in London, the guys are doing their own thing. Haven't heard from Dave - the silent bass player who is busy at London Music Club...but Dan and Pat have been writing and recording as "Crazy Company", their side project which has become their main project. Well, and Dan has another band -- ouch! Not sure of the name...I'll find out. Report back to this poor, neglected blog.

love Linda

Google buns

I was just reading from The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton -- well, some hours ago, obviously, as it was Beatrice's bedtime story. I kept thinking about the Google Buns and thought it would be fun to try to make some. The food in this story, about four children who climb up the aforementioned tree where different lands float by -- you get to them by climbing an ladder that rises up through a hole in a cloud and presto! you're in the Land of Sweets, or the Land of Topsy Turvy or the Land of Dreams.

If you want to be regaled with Blyton's description of Google buns, check this out:
http://inkscrawl.blogspot.com/2006/05/google-buns-ink-scrawl-nugget-12.html

And yes, it did make me hungry to read about Google buns, so I had to eat a handful of chocolate chipped, nicked from the freezer while I read my Collection Development textbook. The kids thought it was cool and unusual that I had homework like them when I first went back to school (yes, library school at UWO!) but now they have come to dislike it. I was monopolizing the Oxford English Reference dictionary today -- just when Beatrice needed it. Nasty mother. But she did smile when I returned it promptly. No quips today about late fines.
